The church acted as a unifying factor for the Russian nation. Church holidays and fasts enriched and brought meaning to the cycle of seasons and sowing in the subsistence society. Russians possessed a deep religious faith and from it they derived a sense of purpose in the universe and the promise of salvation. The church nourished and preserved the culture of Russia during centuries of internal strife and foreign intervention. Orthodox people feel a strong sense of community and brotherhood towards one another through a shared bond of faith. As a result of this emphasis on community, the rights of the group tend to take precedence over the rights of the individual in Russian culture. The Orthodox and Catholic faiths had an adversarial relationship for years. As this rift deepened and grew increasingly antagonistic, the rift between the East and the West also grew. The Tsar of All Russia derived his power and right to rule from his status as Gods chosen representative on earth. In the Byzantium tradition the concept of symphonia defined the relationship between the church and the state and acted as a balance on the unlimited power of the tsar. As the head of the church and the head of the state, the metropolitan and the tsar were equals and the metropolitan had the right to  censure the tsar. The dispute between the Possessors and the Non-Possessors challenged the idea of symphonia, or harmony and cooperation between the pillars of society. The Possessors and the Non-Possessors held vastly different ideas about the role the church should play in society and politics. When the philosophy of the Possessors triumphed, the church gained the right to wealth and serfs at the expense of political influence. The tsar became superior to the metropolitan, and the regime could now interfere in secular matters of the church. The release of the tsar from any source of accountability left the tsar with absolute, unlimited power. The abuses of Ivan the Terrible typify the danger of absolute rule left unchecked. The Russian people actually believed that God had sent Ivan to rule Russia as a punishment for her sins. The split between the two factions caused the losers, the Non-Possessors, to be reviled as heretics. This had a negative effect because the church came to be represented by a faction instead of through a consensus. This led to only one set of ideas being developed in the church and the culture and as a result it lost some of its vitality. The Possessors made ritual sacrosanct. Every gesture, word, and movement was significant and to deviate from the service in any way would be heresy. This emphasis in the exterior form of religion over inner exultation paved the way for another conflict that was to seriously undermine the power of the church. The third Rome theory was formulated by the monk Philotheus in the fifteenth century. He asserted that Russia was the heir and protector of the only true faith. Rome and Constantinople had both fallen and Moscow was the third and final seat of Orthodoxy. This theory legitimized the Russian Orthodoxys power and affirmed that she was no longer dependent on Constantinople. A church schism occurred in the seventeenth century due to changes in ritual implemented by the Patriarch Nikon. His attempts to rectify inconsistencies in the rituals of the Greeks and the Russians were merely to establish greater solidarity and continuity between the two faiths. Russia was trying to help the Greeks who were living under Turkish rule since 1439. Russia had a sense of manifest destiny and she felt that she had been chosen to defend the Eastern Orthodox peoples. The belief that ritual must be sacrosanct caused the alteration of ritual to be considered heretical. Those who  refused to change their rhythms of worship were called Old Believers and they were executed and silenced by the authorities. The Old Believers insisted on following the old forms because they feared committing heresy. The way they saw the situation was that Rome had fallen because of heresy. Moscow was the last seat of Orthodoxy and if Russia fell from the grace of God, it would mean the end of the world. The basic issue in the schism was the relationship between the Russian and Orthodox churches. Some felt that since Russia had adopted Orthodoxy from Byzantium she should remain a junior partner. Others felt that it was Russias destiny to be a leader and to free her Eastern brethren. The Orthodox relegion has been essential to the people to bring them a sense of hope and destiny and a glimpse of heaven on earth. The choice of Orthodoxy was as influential as the Mongul Yoke on the formation of the Russian character. Hamlet: Appearance vs. Reality One of the most famous and popular authors and script writers is William Shakespeare. Shakespeare has always been able to create interesting characters and one of the reasons they are so interesting might be that they are complex people with their inner selves differing from their outer selves. Are the characters in Hamlet the same on the inside as they appear to be on the outside? The characters in William Shakespeare's Hamlet can be studied in a manner relating to appearance versus reality. Some of these characters are Claudius, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, and Hamlet. One character who enables us to examine the theme of appearance versus reality is Claudius, the new King of Denmark. In Act One, Scene Two Claudius acts as though he really cares for his brother and grieves over the elder Hamlet's death. This is shown in his first speech addressed to his court, "and that it us befitted/To bear our hearts in grief, and our whole kingdom/To be contracted in one brow of woe" (Shakespeare I22-4). It is shown further on in the same speech when he says, "our late dear brother's death" (Shakespeare I219). However, this is not how Claudius truly feels about his brothers death, for Claudius is the one who murders elder Hamlet. We see the proof of this in Claudius' soliloquy when he appears to be praying; "O, my offence is rank, it smells to heaven./It hath the primal eldest curse upon't/A brother's murder" (Shakespeare III336-38). Another love which Claudius fakes is the love he has towards his nephew and stepson, Hamlet. In his first speech to his court Claudius tells Hamlet not to leave for school but to remain in Denmark; "It is most retrograde to our desire/And we do beseech you, bend you to remain/Here in the cheer and comfort of our eye" (Shakespeare I2114-117). However, later in the play Claudius develops a plan to send Hamlet away from Denmark with the aid of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern; "And he [Hamlet] to England shall along with you [R & G]" (Shakespeare III34). Claudius also refers to himself as "Thy loving father, Hamlet" (Shakespeare IV350) but when Hamlet is out of the room a few moments later Claudius has a complete change of face in which he reveals his plan to have Hamlet executed; "Our sovereign process, which imports at full/By letters congruing to that effect/The present death of Hamlet" (Shakespeare IV363-65). Two exquisite paintings with a female reclining nude as the focal point are La Grande Odalisque by Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres and Olympia by Édouard Manet. The female nude has been a crucial subject for art throughout history.   The angular curves and the sensuality that can be created with just a form has intrigued artist in the past, present, and future.   While the similarities of these two painting are more evident, there are still contrast between the pieces. Ingres was from France and he painted during the Neoclassical Period, while Manet, who was also from France, painted during the Realism and Impressionistic Periods.   Their live overlapped each other for only thirty years, but their styles belonged to different periods.   Ingres lived through the French Revolution and was very much affected by it although Manet was born after it was over. Seeing such a drastic change in the world in which he lived caused Ingres to pay very close attention to the details of the past.   He wanted to preserve it perfectly and he also looked to the techniques of the masters before him.   Manet was not so much concerned for the past, but his eyes were on the present.   His subjects represent the French societal and cultural setting of the time period in which he lived. La Grande Odalisque by Ingres is an oil painting of a lone nude female reclining on her bed.   Her body faces away from the viewer, while the woman looks back over her shoulder.   There is only a glimpse of her breast under one of her arms and the rounded sides of her buttocks are visible. Olympia by Manet has two females in the oil painting.   One is a black servant woman and the reclining female nude.   Manet depicted his nude facing the viewer.   Her breasts are completely exposed and her genitals are covered by her hand. There is a tropical feel in Manet’s painting  Ã‚   Even though she has covered part of herself, this female seems more open with her nudity and the female in Ingres’ painting is more subtle and alluring with her body. Ingres uses muted shades of green jewel tones to create an elegant effect.   Manet also incorporates the color green, but he emphasizes the stark white which allows the female to stand out.   The white also gives a harshness to the painting.   It is as if someone turned on a bright overhead light in the middle of a sensual moment.   The model in Ingres’ painting tends to blend with her surroundings. Both females hold something with her hand, but Ingres’ female’s fan is one of peacock feathers which blends in with the rich tones of the background.   At the barefoot of Ingres’ nude, there is a pipe and green stool, while there is a black cat at the high healed feet of Manet’s.   Manet’s figure wears an orchid in her hair as well as the shoes.   She finds no modesty with the observation of her servant’s stare and is completely open with her sexuality. The female nude is the predominate subject of both paintings but the differences reflect their artist and there artistic periods.   While they are both alluring, they are also starkly contrasted.   Manet and Ingres were definitely masters of their times, and the La Grande Odalisque and Olympia are examples of both of their best work.   Both of these works are alluring and sensual paintings that will mystify viewers as long as the two works exist.

Chaucer Marie De France Essay In his The Millers Tale Chaucer presents a side of the courtly love tradition never seen before. His characters are average middle class workers rather than elite nobility. There is an interesting comparison between the Millers characters and those in two of Marie de Frances lais that share very close plot lines. Instead of being idealized Chaucers characters are gritty. Instead of being involved in courtly love there is some evidence that the relationship between Alison and Nicholas is one of lust. Chaucers use of the lower class makes the absurdity of what they are doing stand out. In the lais of Marie de France, Guigemare and Yonec, are built on the same archetype which is the same as Chaucers Millers tale uses. Maries lais can give provide a set of ground rules for this archetype. The two lais share several similar elements. They both contain the same three central characters, who possesses fundamental similarities, the same beginning plot line and several of the same themes. The first character shared by the two lais is the storys villain, the aged husband. He is a powerful lord who is much older than his wife. Because he is conscious of this fact, he worries constantly that his wife will betray him, so he locks her up. He is both the least and most important figure in the story. Hes important because without his presence and actions the story could never take place. But he has very little actual interaction with the other two more central characters. The husband in Yonec is never described as meeting either his wife or her lover. In Guigemare the husband, wife and Guigemare are only together when the two lovers are discovered. The figure of the beautiful, imprisoned wife is the second central character. She is the quintessential damsel in distress, beautiful, noble and with the exception of her one true love chaste. The third character is the valiant lover who rescues the unhappy and imprisoned damsel. In both Guigemare and Yonec this character is a knight, and like his lover, the damsel in distress, he is the stereotypical knight in shining armor. He is described as being afflicted by love, and says he will die without it. He will go to any extent for his true love. As with characters both Guigemare and Yonec share a similar plot line. The young wife is locked up by her jealous husband. Then by some magical means her lover is transported to her. After some protestation from the woman, and some wooing from the knight, the two become lovers, until they are discovered and separated. After this point the two plots diverge. Also central to both stories is the idea that these extra-marital affairs are not improper. In Guigemare, the ladys maid says to the knight: The man who wishes to love my lady must keep her constantly in his thoughts and, if you remain faithful to each other, the love between you will be right and proper. pg. 49 Obviously fidelity is important, but not forced fidelity. Love is more important than marriage in these lais. Its also important to note the chastity of the lovers. There is no mention of contact between the imprisoned wives and their husbands. In Yonec the Lord of Caerwent takes his wife for the purpose of child bearing, but she is imprisoned for seven years before meeting her lover and no children are evidenced from the text. Guigemare has never been in love before he meets his true love. This consideration is even more striking by the fact that Guigemare either could not or would not fall in love while in his own land. So those are the basic elements involved in the imprisoned wife archetype used by Marie. In The Millers Tale Chaucer uses same basic plot line, and similar characters. One of the largest differences between the Chaucers characters and Maries characters is their level of wealth and their position in society. This causes them to be portrayed in a different manner than Maries rich, noble characters. The first of the three major characters is present largely unchanged. He is not of course a king or lord, but John the carpenter is obviously a man of at least some amount of wealth, evidenced by the fact that he has a house that is big enough that he can rent rooms from. He is also more present than the jealous husband of Marie. He does not lock his wife up in a tower and stay far away from her. Unlike the husbands in Maries lais he still has contact with his wife. The two sleep in the same bed as we see when Absalom tries to sing to Alison. Johns level of jealousy is not as great as that of Maries husbands. When he awakens to hear Absalom singing to his wife he does nothing. And as Absalom continues to try to woo Johns wife away from him in his presence, he still does nothing. The king in Yonec kills his wifes lover, in Guigemare he at first attempts to do the same. He even allows a man, Nicholas, to be near to his wife. The only man allowed close to Guigemares lover is a priest who had lost his lower members. Alison, Chaucers imprisoned wife, is less of the ideal than her counterparts in Marie. Certainly she is beautiful. But her is beauty is slightly flawed. She is graceful and slim like weasel. By comparing her with a weasel Chaucer makes Alison seem to be dirty and untrustworthy. Morally the comparison between Alison and her counterparts in Marie is more confusing. Chaucer describes her as having a wanton eye. But her protestation seems to be more real, and Nicholas seems to have gone to farther lengths to make her his lover. When Nicholas professes his love to her Chaucer describes her reaction as such: twisted her head away hard/ and said, I wont kiss you, on my faith;/ why let me be, she said, let be, Nicholas, or Ill cry Help! and alas! pg. 55 Alison seems quite adamantly opposed to becoming Nicholas lover here, as opposed to the wife in Yonec, who simply needs proof that her lover to be is Christian. Her refusals, and then Nicholas only winning when he had pushed her so hard sounds, at least to the modern reader, to be rape. But just lines later she swears a vow with Nicholas. The shifts made by the women in Marie are not nearly so drastic. At no point in Guigemare or Yonec do you get the feeling that the women will refuse either of their lovers. Absalom, on the other hand, possesses many more of the qualities that one would expect that a lover in a story about courtly love would have. He is described as being handsome, or at least well groomed. He involves himself in what could be described as courtly pursuits such as dancing Chaucer says that he knew twenty different steps and can play two instruments. His attempts at winning her love are more traditionally romantic. He sings under her window, sends her gifts and even money to try to earn her love. Like Maries knights Absalom is afflicted by love. Alison causes him to stay awake at night. But he is also a little squeamish/ about farting and prim in speech. pg. 157, not the most masculine of characters. The Miller views Johns marriage to Alison as a mistake. He says: People should marry according to their condition,/ for youth and age are often at odds. pg. 153 In considering what happens to the two lovers at the end of the story there is no indication that Chaucer thought that what they were doing was wrong. It would seem that if their actions where thought to be incorrect then they would have been discovered, and some sort of misfortune would have resulted to cite a more extreme case, the Jews in the Prioresses Tale. But instead, of being punished they get away with their affair. Absalom gets his revenge on Nicholas with a hot poker, but John the carpenter seems to be the ultimate loser. Nicholas and Alison get away with their night of passion, and hes made to look like a fool in front of the whole neighborhood. Class is the major difference between the characters of Chaucer the Millers Tale and Maries lais. Maries lovers are idealized, what each knight and lady should strive for. Chaucers lovers are dirty, animal like and raucous. The Millers Tale is a parody of the courtly love tradition. But the fact that Chaucer uses the lower classes as his characters makes his story even more absurd. Instead of being wise they are foolish.

It is possible that the Amiable’s lived deep inland as their language lacks a term for â€Å"ocean.† Their lack of a word for â€Å"fish† also hints that they did not live near any large water bodies as it is inconceivable that any costal tribe would fail to engage in fishing as an economic activity. From the Amiable’s language, we find that they had several words for precipitation with most translating as â€Å"rain† and only one meaning â€Å"snow.† One might suggest from these that their climate was characterized by regular rains and snow falls were only periodically phenomena. The Amiables language offers us some valuable insight into the type of foods that the tribe may have consumed. The prevalence of words for grain in their language might be a possible indication that grains, and particularly wheat, was the staple food of the people. In as much as their language gives a positive indication that these people reared animals such as cows, pigs and sheep, there is no indication that the tribe utilized these animals for meat or hide. One can conclude from this that children were highly regarded by the Amiables. This supposition is further advanced by the fact that the Amiables had seven terms to describe the stages of life up to puberty (which marks the end of childhood) and only one term to describe life henceforth to death. It can therefore be speculated that the family of these tribe was centered on the children. Sex was primarily used for procreation and their term for sex translates as â€Å"to plant a wise one,† therefore underscoring the procreative role that sex played to the Amiables as well as the reverence with which children were held. The Amiable tribe was a literate and educated people. This can be deduced from the many words that the tribe had for books which implies a great exposure by the tribe to books. It is therefore possible that great emphasis was placed on a formal education that resulted in the ability to read by the population. One might also concede that this people were well cultured and had an inclination to the artistic works. Being satisfied with or without authority isnt the only important factor about these main characters. There is also the fact that the sources of this power and wealth are different for both of them. For example, Hamida was determined to be affluent and dominating she intended to do so by marrying a rich man. She was dependant on her fate to get married to someone just because she thought she was so pretty and perfect. Hamida did not have much to offer. She was not very smart nor did she have a very strong personality. Her only way out of Midaq Alley would have been getting married. In contrast, Nyai in the beginning also did not have much to offer. But she taught herself, her power and wealth came because she made herself into this strong woman who could face anything.
